Missionary Service

Hey mom,
well I will try to respond to everything, took me a bit to read. resort to dads email to because I put stuff in there to. so yeah I am finally getting over being sick. it was way bad but we muscled through it. there really isn't any sense in sending me stuff I need now like the colloidal silver because it will take like 3 weeks to get here. and as for the boots and stuff I would rather not risk it. I can buy them here, there are really good stores here that sell very good products. but the shoes I had to buy I bought at the renok which is like a giant market place with every random object you could think of. so rather than risk them being stolen I can buy them here. because I have access to my account now. Thats way sweet! I hope you got the job! who cares where its at. its kind of weird my comp has only 2 more months left. I will be "killing him" as we put it in the mish. so I have whats going on with me in just getting out here and then there is his were as he has been here for 2 years. kinda of wierd. yeah I would have quite the cleaning job a LONG! time ago I'm glad you did. just yesteday (thats why I didn't email) we had to go start a garden for one of our investigators who has a baptismal date! (WE HAVE 3 NEXT MONTH BY THE WAY) pretty tough work. because they dont have tools that make it easy to do like in america. we use scyths like the grim reaper holds, shovels, this other weird tool that I cant remember the name. hard work, got lots of sun and bit by a bajillion misquitoes! the work is exploding here, and we can only be grateful! we know we have been doing the things that we should be doing here but Heavenly Father has blessed us in being able to witness His miracles happening in Zhitomyr. One of our investigators is looking for happiness... he has got to be like 65-70 years old and lives alone (way lonely) he is separated from his family who live in Russia, he writes to them but never recieves anything back, he was in the army so lives off of pention which is not alot here. we tracted into him about a week ago and he seemed somewhat intersted. we left him a book of mormon and about a week later he said he read the address in it and came to the church. we just saw him intently reading the sign outside, he cant be over 5'2. came out and invited him to church, to our surprise he came, I sat next to him and tried my best to speak to him. one of the songs I assumed touched him because he started crying, dont know him well enought to call him out and ask why he was crying but he stayed for all 3 meetings. we gave him the plan of salvation with a baptismal commitment and he said "I will, I will" he is way solid. really nice old man. I dont have time to write down everything that I want to say, nor can I remember it all. but just know that I am SERVING!  I dont know the language very well but what I do know I share. we tract ALOT! and its paying off. last week we had 31 members at church. that is HUGE for zhitomyr. the people here, since they have been under soviet rule for so long. the comparison that the MTC gave us is they are like a coconut, and we are like peaches. we are just a bunch of softy's, we will smile to anyone even if we dont mean it. they have really no expression on there face. you really have to search for a reason to talk to them. they are true though, if they dont like you, they will tell you. if you have put on weight, they will tell you. once you crack the coconut they are the nicest people ever! it would seem like they live to serve and help. Its harder to contact the younger generation. but we are working on it. That makes me very happy to know I'm in everyone's prayers. I want you to know I am serving the best I know how. The Lord is letting us witness this great work here and we are doing the things we need to to be apart of it. I Love you all, and pray for things to continue to get better.

Beatuiful places all around the world!!!

hey dad,
It was good to talk to you yesterday. hope you fathers day went well.  hey are you still thinking of coming to pick me up? if so I think it would be wise to start saving now. the tickets will be the most expensive thing. everything else here is WAY cheap. you can get the best suits and shirts for about $80 to $150 in dollars its kinda cool. I was just thinking about it if you were coming or not. Leviv is awesome! its pure Ukrainian and the city has never been bombarded so its still got ALL of its cobblestone streets! it was way cool and our church building there is 3 stories high. reason being land is so expensive here so they buy and build up rather than out. good luck on your talk, I just got called to be a councler in the Sunday School Presidency and next week I will be assigned to be the Elders Quarom President. wierd how things work here. yeah its way humid but the rains have finally come so its a cold humid now... you will not beleive it! prayers were awnsered I have a winter dress coat! we were checking out the apartment and found a brand new one. its XXL size but hey atleast its not to small!  Well I'm trying to send pics if I dont get them on this one I'll have them on moms! hey when is everyone moving? love you dad|
Happy Fathers day!

Different Cultures

well I thought I knew the language until I got here lol but its coming along! yeah we have 9 investigators right now! there is alot of teaching going on. yes i'm obeying mission rules. and yes tracting is a whole new kind of work out. we tract up ten stories for every building so I'm getting my excersize!  the food is interesting! the first house that someone let us in he sat us down asked if we wanted vodka we said no then he asked if we wanted chai and we said no we asked if he had juice and brings out this bucket out of the fridge. stirs it with a smirk and poors out this thick chunky milk like liquid and says drink up! we were like "yeeeeaaaaah no!" we got him talking about his family and he went to go get pictures. one that happend I dipped my finger in it to find out what it was and it was SOOOOOO sour milk with chunks. but there was no alcohol in it. he came back and started getting offended we weren't drinking " thats all I have guys" " fine just dump it in the sink he says and I was like "no" I felt bad, so I cowboy'd up grabbed the glass and took a big swallow! YUUUCKKKKKK!!!!!! its called kaffer, supposed to be a healthy drink but its gross anyway. oh yeah I've been down with a horrible cough! long before that insident. I hope it goes away. well gotta email mom now
love ya

Eternal Families

Brother Johnson,
I just talked to Elder Johnson, and he received the news well, considering how difficult it could be. He said he was surprised, since his grandfather didn't seem ill when he left. I asked how he felt, and he said he felt okay. I told him you would soon call him. He was on the train on the way to zone conference when I called, so I hope your call will go through. If it doesn't just try again. It was 7:35 when I called him, and we have zone conference at 10 am this morning in L'viv. So I'll see him there and will follow up to make sure he's doing alright still.
Our condolences go to you on this tragic event. I lost my grandmother last summer, while were here, and Sister Steinagel lost her father last spring. it was hard to miss the funerals, but we have felt their presence since then. How grateful we are for our Heavenly Father's plan and the hope that we will all be with Him again.
May the Lord bless and comfort you.

Hey mom!
so that was interesting and unexpected yesterday! pretty cool though. I hope dad had a good fathers day. I did get a present for him in Leviv, it cost me a meal but its pretty sweat! yeah I dont have to think about USA for the next year and a half! its really hard to keep focused here, not just for me. its right in the middle of summer and satan has quite the hold on these people so the last thing I need is another distraction. I'm glad you found a job! sounds like it sucks but... yeah. if it makes you feel anybetter none of the public transportations use air conditioning, its crazy humid and to tract one building wich we do about 4 at a times a day we have to 10 stories up and work our way down. NO elevator :S but Im getting my excersize. you should read the email I sent to dad, has a story in there and I have a new winter coat! so yeah check it out! I hope Chris gets better, yeah I have a mean cough right now to, been really sick lately but I'll kick it sooner or later! kind of funny there are 3 or 4 zones in our mission we had zone conference in Leviv with 2 of the zones, Im the biggest Elder of them all! and i've lost weight. what with all that tracting! Elder Johnson thinks its funny because the people who used to mess with him dont anymore when they see us coming! he is a way cool comp. I feel way blessed! considering my last. yes mom ofcourse i HAVE to buy my stuff here! everything is way cheap and I dont have time to go a look at prices on things! our pdays are way short! and I told dad if you two are thinking of coming it would be awesome! things are WAYY cheap but they are the best! just need to know where to find it. You dont have to transfer the money into Ukrainian they do that here. I heard we are all getting called to the temple when it opens and that the first presidency and 7 of the 12 are going to be there! this is HUGE! OOOOHHH so we went and did Chalk drawing in the park for a contacting tool! decided to draw the plan of salvation, didn't bring the right thing to send picture this week but I will! it looked WAYYY cool and it was huge! we gave out like 40 plan of salvation pamphlets 55 temple pass along cards and got 2 new investigators out of it! lol he asked if I can draw and after I said yes we went and threw down! it looked way cool! everyone stops to read and look at it. we are thinking of doing the Kiev temple this week! yeah well I hope I answered all your questions I guess the package stuff is not that big of a deal here, everyone seems to get there packages just fine so whenever you want to send something go ahead. road on a Harry Potter Train yesterday on the way back! took us all night but there were beds and everything! was way sweat! well mom love you, hope all is wellin Pagosa, I keep the family in my prayers always. love you

JET LAGGGGGGGG

ok SO!
Its about 3:30 in the morning where you are at. means it 12:30 noon my time! this place is INSANE!!! holy cow! long flight over, I contacted this jewish lady on the plane, she was really sweet and I gave her a passalong card. funny story I made a commitment that I would contact the person that I was sitting next to. I get on the plane and he's not over 7 years old haha it was cool though. on our flight over to Kiev we met one of the members of kiev ward. that was way cool! she was really nice, its funny though the people here have no bubble, so you can expect them to be right up in your face! kind of weird to get used to but thats not the half of it. kids start smoking at like 9 here, they dont care whats on billboards, we were caught off gaurd our first day we were coming around a corner and we were just trying to see if we could translate the signs, woman was just bearing it all! atleast the top half! OI! we had to train our eye's quick because the skirts are 9 inches shorter (summer so lots of em.... oi its so humid here! :S) and the shirts are just as bad from the neck down. down town is amazing! we were in kiev for our first night and the next day we were shipped out to our cities. So I'm serving with Elder Johnson in shhjitomuer, I dont know how to spell it in english but its just south and to the left of kiev, about an hour and a half away. really cool cause my teachers opened up the city so the branch is way small. Speaking of the branch yesterday was sunday and I had to bear my testimony, that was nerv racking. my comp speaks the lingo really well and he knows russian. our city has both languages and our investigators speak both languages! lol its fun. I'm loving it! othere than the heat! yuck! .... um oh yeah our first day we got cursed! haha this guy came up to us when they took us to mcdonalds ( thats how you can tell the pop. of a city is if it has mcdy's) we were eating and he came up to us and in russian starting demanding money for food. well we cant give money for food, one its not our money and two if we do the gypsies swarm us. so us greenies were just trying to figure out what he was trying to say, and the senior comps were just playing stupid slappin words together that dont make anysense. funny thing was is we weren't playing stupid haha we couldn't figure out what he was saying. anyway after he ranted on he cursed us, we just kind of sat back and said " I didn't know he had the authority to do that!" anyway I'm serving in my city, the language I feel like I forgot but I'm trying. OH! so one of our investigators well the family, I met them the other day and the missionaries do kind of a trade off there 17 year old daughter is learning English. her teachers give her lessons, words to practice oh my goodness you wouldn't beleive some of the them! they DO NOT know what the four letter word stand for, cause she was just saying it casually because she was under the impression it ment something else.  so we go over and talk to her in English and then invite the family to listen to the lesson afterwords! they have an amazing family!!! the dad is awesome and there mom is so sweet! she gave us real honey from a bee farm which was amazing! and the little boy trips me out everytime he speaks Ukrainian to me. haha yeah another eye training time. her name is julia, and with it being summer the men are have dressed and the woman were hardly anything! I thought if she would have breathed in deep enough the buttons are her dress would have gone flying! the mission prez talked to us and said that would be the number one thing to train yourself because you do NOT see that in the states. this is SOOOO Europe!  we ride on public transportation everywhere we go here, bus's and these little dingy things called marshootka's those are always hot because the people here have a superstition if there is a draft in a car you will get very sick so they are usually way hot cause the windows are kept closed and no air conditioning. its 37 celcius outside withought the humididty and we are pretty much an oven in those things. haha yeah and nobody cares how crowded it is, if they need that marshootka then they are going to get on it. my companion got butt sweat all over his shirt from this huge lady, and I got plastered by another womans chest. so gross you cant stand up all the way and sometimes you have to stand because there are not any seats.  well there was like 45 people in this little thing and I just kept getting pushed and pushed and the people keep getting closer and closer oi bad news. I'm working as hard as I can right now, jet lag is kicking my but but I'm almost over it. the nights are super hot so its tough sometimes but I'm trying. My comp is pretty much aswesome! these next couple transfers are going to go great! yeah I wrote back to tine before I left and gave her my new address. miss her I hope she writes. um... oh yeah we taught english the other eday. the little kids love english and talking to them about america. haha its way fun. no mountains here but thats ok, atleast I know where to find them. we already ran into the mafia here, haha there actually pretty cool cats and there english is hilarious. we call em tomatoes for our slang. everyone knows the word mafia and so in english we just call them tomatoes because no one understands us. they drive around the nicest cars here so there easy to spot. hmmm... what else. the food is different but some of it is a good different! oh my goodness the juices here are 100% juice! they are amazing!!! oh man! I've already picked out things I dont like but I eat them anyway. we dont really get fed by the members because we dont have a big branch. lol yeah $37 a week is not alot but it works. had to buy some new shoes and got ripped off, they are already breaking! but one of our investigators is a shoe repair so we are going to use that as another excuse to go see him. yeah there are old buildings EVERYWHERE here. especially the old churches. I haven't seen all of kiev yet cause I'm here but I LOVE the people the kids and the old people are pretty much the best. hmmm... yeah so things are great!  I have faith it will bring in the blessings! you can tell taleya that all of our investigators have seen that picture of her and her crazy lips! lol they love looking at pictures so we are encouraged to show ours! really funny. oh yeah having more than 2 kids in a family is huge! they saw we had four and were amazed on how big our family was! haha well today are my pdays (mondays that is) gotta figure out how the rest of this day is suppose to work! andno they didn't get frisky with us, infact we had to wait and hour and a half after because they broke one of the other elders bags. kinda worried the wheels on mine are bending out and I'm pretty sure thats not a good thing. hmmm... I'm sure things are rought without dad but it will all be good soon. he's working to bless the fam.. lol we both are! things could be alot worse you know so count the blessings! oh yeah cobble stone streets EVERYWHERE! huge downtown squares. lots of cars, yeah everyone is curtious when they drive but they drive like maniacs, very aggressive drivers so the buses get fun.  well I'm about outa time. I still cant beleive I'm here, feels like i'm in a dream. Its really hard here... but I'm taking it a step at a time. Love you all I hope things are great! sorry for the randomness of everything in the email. I hope things are great! keep writing. Love you

They have ARRIVED!!!!!

Dear Brother and Sister Johnson,

Sister Steinagel and I were pleased to welcome your son Elder Roger William Johnson, to the best mission in the world, the Ukraine Kyiv Mission. He is well and happy and we are impressed with his enthusiasm and preparation. After he arrived, we took the new missionaries for a brief visit to downtown Kyiv, including a visit to the Prince Volodymyr Statue along the Dnipro River, which is the site where Elder Boyd K. Packer dedicated the land of Ukraine to the preaching of the gospel on September 12, 1991. The missionaries were then taken to dinner and given a good night’s rest. Elder Johnson and I also had a brief interview, I gave him a priesthood blessing, and the assistants gave him a brief orientation to the mission.

This morning Elder Johnson attended a transfer meeting where he met his new companion, Elder Johnson (this is not a type-o!). This afternoon they departed to their new area, which is in Zhytomyr. Trainers are chosen for their competence and dedication, and you can have confidence that your son is in good hands. We have enclosed a photograph of them and myself taken from this morning.

Please know what a privilege it is to work with your son. They’ve now joined the family of missionaries serving here with us, all of whom are committed to build Zion here by helping as many souls as possible to come unto Christ through baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost. It is my prayer that the Lord will sustain Elder Johnson in this new assignment.

You might be interested to know that our missionaries have preparation day on Mondays. On that day they have time to write home and will email you. Please keep in mind that we are nine hours ahead of Utah time.

We welcomed your Elder last evening to Kyiv, Ukraine.  What a fine young man.  Here is some fun information.  Enjoy!

Let's Fly Away Let's Fly Let's Fly Away!!!!!

Hey mom,
ok so first of all I need to let you know about my schedule, fly out on tuesday at 8:45 am so anytime before that I will be calling! I dont know if we can do a 3 way if not dad gave me his number! yeah I hope all of the packages get here before I go, I sent another letter off yesterday to you all, you should get it in  a few days.   we get to NYC at 3 or 4 and then leave from Nyc at 4:45 PM to Kiev, we fly through the night, 8 hours and get into kiev at 9:00 in the morning..... which is 12 midnight here :S we are going to be SOOO tired because they wont let us sleep till that night :S its ok though! so because more of our time is in SLC thats when I'm going to call, I have a poem for you goes like this " When from thy stern tutoring, I would quickly flee, turn me from my tarshish, to where is best for me, help me in my ninevoh, to serve with love and truth, not on a hill side posted, mid shoag of gourd or brook. When my modest suffering seems, so vexing wrong and sore, may I recall what freely flowed, from each and every pore. Dear Lord of the abba cry, help me in my duress, to endure it well enough, and to say "nevertheless" " I think it helps in those trying times to remember our savior and remember that he died for us all, I think in Alma 7 verse 11-14 it talks about that how he went through all of that so that he could succor his people, so that he would know how to take care of them in there time of need. his words "father if it be thy will take this cup from me" when he suffered in gethsemany "nevertheless let thy will be done" so stay prayerful because he knows "Yvette Johnson" it will take some time with the language but i will help when i get back :D  so yeah...... yeah I have our number memorized so I will be calling.  cant wait to talk to you! love you all, not sure how to use the telephones at the airport yet. I might beable to ask the other elders but I'm not sure. love you all, hope you get my letter
